Commissioned in 1852 by the head of the Champs Élysées’ Cirque d’Été, the Cirque d’Hiver was built by Jacques Hittorf in a little less than eight months. Its history has been marked by a number of changes in usage and operators, who carried out multiple modernisation and successive decoration works. The Bouglione family, who have been its operator since1934 and owner since 1954, has commissioned its complete renovation. An emblematic site in terms of its architecture and past, the project chosen aims to restore the edifice’s original design as faithfully as possible, identically restoring its structures, staffs and paintings, whilst at the same time taking care to use sustainable materials and anticipate the indispensable techno-logical changes necessary for the circus arts’ evolution.
